WHAT ARE ADIPOSE (FAT) STEM CELLS?

Adipose stem cells, also known as mesenchymal cells, are an attractive and abundant stem cell source with therapeutic use in diverse fields for the repair and regeneration of acute and chronically damaged tissues. These cells have the capacity to form osteoblasts or bone structure, chondrocytes or cartilage, and myocytes or muscles. Often Adipose Stem cells are combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP) which is abundant with growth factors and other cells critical to tissue regeneration.

HOW DO YOU COLLECT ADIPOSE (FAT) STEM CELLS?

Adipose Stem cells are typically collected with a needle from either the stomach area or the love handles. The area of extraction is locally numbed to minimize any discomfort. Often the procedure is compared to a very minor liposuction. Once the fat has been extracted, it is placed into a centrifuge for spinning. Spinning at a high speed separates the stem cells from the fat mixture. Once isolated the stem cells are typically mixed with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and are reintroduced to the injured area through a needle.

ARE THERE ANY RISK?

Adipose (Fat) Stem cell extractions are safe procedures when conducted by a trained professional in a sterile environment. Complications are rare due to it being minimally invasive and that you are the donor for yourself. That means there is no risk of transferring disease from another person or risk of rejection.

THE HEALING PROCESS

Adipose Stem cells are the regenerative cells responsible for repairing and rebuilding damaged tissue. The concentrated cells accelerate the healing process, can provide pain relief, and improve overall function. Some patients notice benefits within the first week following the procedure although some take longer. The healing cascade can be active and take place up to 6 weeks. A follow up PRP booster may be recommended if the desired results are not met.

HOW LONG IS THE PROCEDURE?

Treatment is in an outpatient setting. Actual extraction can take as little as 15 minutes but the complete procedure will take a bit longer. Typically, patients are done within an hour.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY TIME?

The majority of patients are able to return to usual activities 1-2 days.
